Mel Gibson Quotes

Jonathan Rowe on Dec 29th 2005

Ed Brayton and a few other sources have brought up Mel Gibson’s Playboy interview which includes among other things a dumb quote on evolution and some conspiratorial rants. The quotes were cited by someone who didn’t have the issue in his hands (and the interview is not online); thus, it was cautioned to make sure the quotes were accurate before further disseminating them.

Well I do have the issue in my hands (long story short, my older brother’s Playboy collection is archived at my house) and those quotes are 100% accurate.

I’ll do a longer post on this. In skimming the article, those quotes just scratch the surface. It’s ironic that the religious right lauds Gibson and thinks of him as a “good Christian family man.” Well in reading the interview, his mouth is more like Howard Stern’s than Billy Graham’s. Now, Mel’s potty mouth doesn’t bother me. But I like Howard Stern type humor. The excerpt from the Lippard blog reproduces Gibson using phrases like, “you might have a bigger dick” and “She was a cunt.” But there’s much more….

I feel stupid asking this since this has been all over the web for several weeks, but have you seen the video of a montage from The Passsion set to Yakkity Sax? Pretty good stuff.

Yeah, Gibson’s completely nuts. It’s a shame, too, I really used to like him. He was so badass in The Road Warrior, and now he’s come to this.

I’m thinking I should pick up this issue of Playboy just for the interview. There’s got to be some even nuttier stuff in there. Does he do more defending of his father’s holocaust denial?

I dunno, whenever I think of Gibson now I think of how he was portrayed by South Park. Seems pretty dead-on to me.

Why should this be any more surprising than some of the idotic things we get from the Hollywood left? So he’s a nut; in a market society people aren’t valued for their opinions, but for what they give us - and I still love Braveheart.

    A Monkey’s Uncle

PZ Meyers links to an interview with Mel Gibson, and calls him a “clueless turd” for this statement: PLAYBOY: So you can’t accept that we descended from monkeys and apes? GIBSON: No, I think it’s bullshit. If it isn’t, why…

It’s expected for a person to evolve and/or change one’s beliefs over time. Mel Gibson did just that….he evolved. He found grace in God. He gave up alcoholism. He gave up a lot of things and foud peace. There’s nothing wrong with a once bad ass, foul mouthed sinner to turn around and be a “good family man.” In fact, I think it’s honorable. I admire him for what he has done, what he has gone through, his past, and his changes. The man has a lot of passion, and he’s directing it the best way he knows.

I know that the interview took place in 1995, but based on what I’ve read, I don’t see any evidence that Mel has “changed” at all. To my knowledge, he did not, “find God” and become “born again” some time after that interview. He was, back then, the “conservative Catholic” that he is today.
